Caravan & Motorhome Covers: Are They Worth It?

Caravan & Motorhome Covers: Are They Worth It?

If you own a caravan or motorhome, you’ve probably asked yourself:
“Do I really need a cover?”

With plenty of options on the market — from caravan top covers to motorhome winter covers — it’s easy to wonder whether they’re just an extra accessory or a genuine necessity.

The truth? A good cover isn’t just worth it — it can save you money, time, and stress in the long run.

Why Do You Need a Caravan or Motorhome Cover in the UK?

The UK’s unpredictable weather can be brutal on a stored vehicle. Rain, snow, frost, salt spray, UV rays, and even tree sap can all cause damage to your caravan or motorhome’s exterior — and that damage adds up fast.

Here’s what a caravan cover or motorhome top cover protects you from:

  • Water ingress that leads to damp or rust

  • UV damage that fades paintwork and weakens seals

  • Debris and grime from trees, birds, or nearby roads

  • Mold and mildew buildup during long-term storage

Especially if you store your vehicle outdoors during winter, a motorhome cover for winter or caravan winter cover is a smart and necessary investment.

Owning a Caravan or a Motorhome is a thrilling adventure, offering the freedom to explore new places at your own pace. However, with great freedom comes great responsibility – the responsibility to protect your caravan from the elements and ensure its longevity. One essential tool for safeguarding your investment is a cover. In this blog, we’ll explore the importance of Caravan & Motorhome covers and tips for proper usage.

How Do You Choose the Right Size and Fit for Your Vehicle?

Choosing the right cover size is key. A loose or oversized cover can flap in the wind, collect water, or even damage your paintwork. On the flip side, a too-tight cover might tear or not offer full coverage.

Here’s how to get it right:

  1. Measure the full length, width, and height of your vehicle (excluding tow bars).

  2. Look at the manufacturer specs — some covers are designed for specific models.

  3. Choose breathable, waterproof, and UV-resistant materials.

  4. Look for adjustable straps, Velcro tabs, and secure buckles for a tight, windproof fit.

Are Caravan Covers Safe to Use During Winter or Long-Term Storage?

Absolutely — and in most cases, they’re essential. In fact, caravan and motorhome winter covers are specifically made for long-term protection in the colder months.

To use a cover safely and effectively in winter:

  • ✅ Always clean and dry your vehicle before fitting the cover

  • ✅ Use a breathable cover to prevent trapped moisture

  • ✅ Regularly check the vehicle (once every few weeks is ideal)

  • ✅ Secure the cover with windproof straps, especially in stormy conditions

Installation guide

When installing your cover, we recommend not attempting to fit the cover in windy conditions. We also recommend ensuring that your vehicle is dry, clean & free from debris, loose particles & grit to avoid scratching the paintwork.

  • Two people & the careful use of stepladders will be required.
  • Open out the cover. The front section is identified with a ‘FRONT’ label.
  • Unzip the rear panel.
  • Start from the front & work toward the rear, lift the cover carefully over the roof. Adjust the covers position until an even fit all over is achieved.
  • Carefully close the zips and fasten the Velcro tabs.
  • Secure sides of the cover with the straps provided. Pass each strap under the vehicle and secure to the corresponding buckle on the opposite tabs.
  • After fitting, use the extra 2 windproof straps included across the top of the caravan to secure the cover in high windy weather.

What’s the Best Way to Wash a Caravan Cover?

When it comes to washing your cover, we find it is best to clean with a soft sponge & warm water. We do not recommend machine washing or tumble drying the cover for several reasons, one being that it can potentially damage your cover. It is also important to remember to ensure your cover is completely dry before storing.

Are Caravan & Motorhome Covers Really Worth It?

If you want to keep your vehicle in the best possible condition — yes, they are absolutely worth it.

They protect your investment, save you cleaning and repair costs, maintain resale value, and reduce the wear and tear caused by the UK climate. Whether it’s a compact campervan or a full-size touring caravan, covering it properly just makes sense.
