Top Tips for Winter Caravan Storage – Keep Your Tourer Protected All Season

When the touring season ends and temperatures drop, your caravan needs more than just parking space — it needs protection.
Winter weather brings moisture, frost, UV exposure, and long periods of inactivity that can all take their toll.

By following a few smart storage steps, you can prevent damp, corrosion, and sun damage, ensuring your caravan stays spotless and ready for your next adventure.

At UK Custom Covers, we design breathable, waterproof caravan covers and top covers specifically for the British climate, giving your caravan year-round protection from the elements.

1) Clean and Dry Thoroughly Before Storage

Start your winter prep with a deep clean — it’s the best defence against long-term damage.

  • Wash the exterior, paying attention to the roof, seams, and wheel arches.

  • Use caravan-safe cleaning products that won’t strip wax or harm seals.

  • Rinse and dry completely to avoid water spots and corrosion.

  • Apply a protective wax or sealant for an added layer of paint protection.

Pro tip: Clean the roof first — it collects the most dirt, sap, and debris.

Once dry, your caravan is ready for a breathable cover.

2) Choose the Right Type of Protection

A quality cover is essential for keeping your caravan clean and dry through the winter.

For long-term or outdoor storage, a Caravan Cover offers complete protection from rain, frost, and dirt.
Made from 4-ply non-woven PU-coated fabric, it’s waterproof yet breathable, allowing trapped moisture to escape while keeping rain out.

Each cover includes air vents, reinforced straps, reflective strips, and even a free hitch cover — everything needed for secure, year-round protection.

If you only need to shield the roof, a Caravan Top Cover is ideal.
Made from durable 150 D polyester with PU coating, it protects the upper panels from bird droppings, tree sap, and UV rays — perfect for driveways or short-term storage.

3) Ventilate the Interior to Prevent Damp

Moisture inside the caravan can cause mould and odours if ignored.

  • Leave cupboard doors and lockers open for airflow.

  • Remove bedding, cushions, and textiles that trap moisture.

  • Place dehumidifying crystals or moisture traps inside.

  • Open roof vents slightly if your caravan is covered with a breathable cover.

Bonus tip: Prop the fridge door open and empty it completely to prevent mildew.

4) Look After Tyres and Brakes

Cold weather and inactivity can damage tyres and braking systems.

  • Inflate tyres to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI.

  • Move the caravan a few inches every few weeks to prevent flat spots.

  • Release the handbrake and use wheel chocks instead.

  • If storing for months, raise the caravan slightly or use tyre savers to relieve pressure.

5) Disconnect and Maintain Power Safely

Disconnect the leisure battery and store it indoors on a maintenance (float) charge.
If your caravan is connected to mains power, switch off all non-essential systems and use a smart charger to keep batteries healthy.
Inspect all cables for wear before reconnecting in spring.

6) Protect External Fittings and Components

Before covering, lubricate and secure all external parts:

  • Apply silicone spray to locks, hinges, and stabilisers.

  • Cover towing electrics and the hitch to prevent corrosion.

  • Clean and retract the awning, ensuring it’s completely dry before storage.

  • Check roof lights, aerials, and vents for leaks.

7) Choose a Suitable Storage Location

Where you store your caravan is just as important as how you prepare it.

  • Park on level, well-drained ground.

  • Avoid areas directly under trees or near dripping roofs.

  • If stored outdoors, face the nose slightly downhill to aid water run-off.

  • Use wheel covers or boards under tyres to prevent moisture absorption from the ground.

If you’re using a storage compound, visit occasionally to inspect for damp, leaks, or nesting pests.
